This Primitivo (a relative of Zinfandel and known in the southern region of Puglia, Italy) offers gobs of purple berry and black cherry notes, baking spice and vanilla, mocha a licorice with fine cocoa and pipe tobacco. The palate is plush and laden with spiced mocha, sarsaparilla and ripe berries. A nice juxtaposition of rustic charm and earthiness balanced with generous fruit.
Pair it with barbecued ribs or spicy sausage, hearty pasta dishes or food you'd pair with Zinfandel.
Second Review:
Earthy, plush, savoury.
The nose is earthy, mineral/soil notes atop spiced plums, briary berries, chocolate, leather, crushed purple flowers and savoury spices. The palate is equally succulent; carob, saline, spiced plums lead to a bittersweet cocoa and tobacco finish. Chalky textured tannins and a medium-long finish. Great acidity here to pair: eggplant caponata, rich seafoods, red sauces.
